Student Regulations
Academic Regulations
These rules govern your academic life at UP. You are expected to follow them exactly as any other enrolled student — no exceptions for exchange students.
General Rules & Communication
While at UP, you are subject to UP's student rules and Mexican legislation. Both the International Office and the student must stay in close communication throughout the exchange and report any significant event to the university or embassy.
Course Selection & Accreditation
You are responsible for choosing subjects that can be revalidated according to your study abroad plan. You must attend lectures and meet each course's accreditation requirements just like any other UP student. Your official transcript will be sent through the International Office to your home university for validation.
Duration & Extension
Your exchange is initially one semester. An extension to a second semester is possible, but must be approved by both your home university and UP's Scholar Services. Direct negotiations with UP are not valid.
⚠️ Extension requires passing all but one course in your first semesterPunctuality
You must be in the classroom at the scheduled time. A 10-minute grace period is allowed. After that, any late arrival is recorded as an absence.
⏱️ 10 min tolerance — after that, it counts as an absenceLeaving Class Early
If you leave the classroom before the class period ends and you are out for more than 10 minutes, you will be recorded as absent for that session.
⏱️ Out for more than 10 min = absenceAttendance Requirements
You must maintain at least 80% attendance in each course to receive credit. If you are sick and miss class, you must present a doctor's prescription at the International Affairs office to justify your absence.
✅ 80% attendance required to earn course creditRight to Final Exams
Students with less than 80% attendance in any course lose the right to take the final exam for that course.
🚫 Below 80% = no right to final examThe professor has the last word regarding any academic issue. All academic matters are ultimately decided by the course instructor.
Behavior Regulations
At UP, personal development is just as important as academic growth. Students are expected to conduct themselves in a manner consistent with the university's values — respecting the dignity of every person, in a climate of freedom and full responsibility.
⛔ The following are strictly forbidden on campus
Smoking anywhere within campus premises
Bringing drinks or food into classrooms
Lending your UP Card to any third party
Copying, being copied, selling or buying grades, or violating academic ethics
Carrying, consuming, buying, selling or distributing drugs or alcohol on campus, or entering under their influence
Entering or remaining in any UP facility without proper authorization
Failing to comply with sanctions imposed by university authorities
Any behavior that contravenes the university's institutional principles
Justification of Absences
Missing a class should be the exception, not the rule. If it happens, here is exactly what you must do and the timeline you need to follow.
What to do when you miss a class
Get sick → Notify your coordinator immediately
As soon as you know you'll miss class due to illness, contact your campus coordinator right away. Don't wait until you recover.
Email your professor and copy your coordinator
Let your professor know what's happening and include your coordinator in the email thread. This is required for any absence justification to be considered.
Campus Guadalajara: Copy Cecilia Corrales on all teacher emails regarding absences. Teachers will ask for her approval before making any decision.
Get a valid doctor's prescription
Only a doctor's prescription (illness or hospitalization) is accepted as justification. Traveling, personal plans, or other reasons are not accepted.
COVID-19: Only a laboratory test with a QR code proving a positive result is valid — not a home test.
Submit within 7 days
You have a maximum of 7 days from the absence to submit your medical justification to the International Affairs office. After that, no justification will be accepted.
Important: Even if your absence is justified, it is NOT removed from your record. Justification only allows you to submit late homework, classwork, or take a missed test outside the regular schedule — at the professor's discretion.
Additional Guidelines for GDL Campus
- ✓ Only illness or hospitalization (with prescription) justifies an absence.
- ✓ Check your absence record on the UP4U platform at any time.
- ✓ Each course has its own maximum absence limit — know yours.
- ✓ Special situations outside these rules will be analyzed jointly by the Faculty and the International Affairs office.
- 🚫 Travelling is not a valid excuse to miss class, regardless of circumstances.
Professors have the final say on all academic matters, including whether a justified absence allows you to make up missed work.
